If you’ve ever felt your legs, arms, or core begin to shake during a Pilates exercise, you’re not alone. More importantly, nothing is “wrong” with you.
That shaking sensation is not random. It’s not failure. And it’s not just muscle fatigue.
In many cases shaking during Pilates is a nervous system response, a sign that your brain and body are actively communicating, coordinating, and adapting. That’s why we talk about the mind body connection throughout your Pilates classes.
Understanding why this happens requires looking beyond muscles and into how the nervous system controls movement. I personally was fascinated by this when I first started teaching so it was important for me to understand this and be able to relay to my clients to empower them in their own bodies.

The Nervous System Runs The Show
All movement begins in the nervous system.
Before a muscle ever contracts, the brain must:
- assess joint position (this is called proprioception, knowing where your body is in space)
- determine how much force is needed
- coordinate timing between muscles
- stabilize surrounding joints
- integrate breath and posture
Pilates deliberately challenges this process by slowing movement down, reducing momentum, and placing the body in positions that require precision, stability, and control rather than brute force.
When the nervous system is asked to perform a task it hasn’t fully automated yet, it increases its output and that’s when you generally see the shaking appear.
What Shaking Actually Is (From a Science Perspective)
Shaking occurs when the nervous system is rapidly recruiting and adjusting motor units (which is the motor neuron and the muscle fibers it controls).
This can happen when:
- the demand for stability is high
- the movement is performed slowly
- the body is working near end-range
- multiple muscle groups must coordinate simultaneously
- the brain is refining a new movement pattern
In these moments, the nervous system sends frequent signals to fine tune control. The visible result can look like trembling or shaking… Especially in stabilizing muscles.
This is not a breakdown; it’s neuromuscular adaptation in real time. Cool right?
Why Pilates Presents Shaking More Than Other Exercises
Many traditional workouts use momentum, rely on repetitive patterns, emphasize speed or load, and allow compensations to take over. Pilates removes these shortcuts.
Pilates emphasizes slow controlled movement, breath coordination, joint alignment, deep stabilizer engagement, and awareness over the intensity.
Pilates exposes areas where the nervous system hasn’t yet developed efficient control. This is why even conditioned athletes are often humbled by Pilates.
In faster or high intensity workouts, those same areas may be masked by adrenaline or momentum. Pilates doesn’t hide dysfunction; it reveals it gently and intelligently.
Nervous System Shaking VS. “Bad” Shaking
Not all shaking is created equal.
Adaptive nervous system shaking (which is the kind you often see in Pilates), occurs with slow, controlled movements. Improves with consistent practice, and happens without pain.
Protective or stress-based shaking is accompanied by breath holding, linked to anxiety or overload, is associated with pain or joint instability, and worsens with excessive intensity.
As your nervous system gets smarter and more adaptive, the shaking decreases. Not because the exercise became easier.

If you deal with chronic pain, stress overload, history of injury, trauma, or nervous system dysregulation, Pilates offer you a unique edge.
Rather than constantly activiating fight or flight through intensity, Pilates encourages parasympathetic regulation, it rebuilds your trust in movement, improves body awareness, and restores coordination.
Shaking During Pilates Is Not A Sign Of Weakness
Shaking during Pilates is a sign that the nervous system is engaged, coordination is being refined, stabilizing systems are learning, and the brain is actively involved in the movement.
Pilates doesn’t just train muscles; It trains how the nervous system organizes movement. That’s why it feels different. That’s why it works differently. That’s why it supports long-term sustainable strength. And that’s why most professional athletes incorporate it into their regime.
